Civil War and Reconstruction

There are various national issues that brought an end to the Reconstruction by 1877. Foremost, the major economic depression combined with the need to reduce the power of the national government got during and after the Civil War. In addition, issues related to the race contributed to the end of Reconstruction. Most of the whites from the North were against racial equality and did not want the Reconstruction to continue. People became tired and started losing their interest to control and rebuild the South since they thought that it would help black Americans. Moreover, people were reluctant to allow former slaves to vote and hold office. This situation led to violence spearheaded by the KKK. As a result, Rutherford B. Hayes agreed to remove his troops from the former Confederate states and accept Democratic control on the South as you can see in great essays https://great-essays.com

The North’s victory over the South was tied to the market revolution in the two regions in many ways. To start with, the market revolution played a key role in improving economy of the North tremendously. It led to integration of economy and enhanced urbanization. Industrialization was a key in both of these developments, where the textile industry played the most important role. Also, the market revolution led to the growth of the infrastructure funded by the federal government such as road, railroads, and canal. On the other hand, the market revolution succeed in producing cotton to in the South. The South produced cotton for export in the large quantity thus contributing to foreign exchange earning. However, this region lagged behind economically since the people become more committed to plantation agriculture and neglected other areas of the economy. As a result, there were few cities and ports in the South where shipping of the cotton for export was used as well as the importation of manufactured goods. Similarly, other powerful and profitable functions of the economy remained in the North. This situation, in turn, has contributed to the victory of the North over the South since the latter lacked enough resources thus making it dependable on the former.

The most surprising aspect of Thomas family experience to me was the fact that he managed to live in the North despite the fear they faced related to the slavery and discrimination. Slavery was rampant in the South because it was protected by the law. Moreover, the family with Thomas were continuing to advocate for the abolition of the slavery despite passing the law that would allow the slaves in the North to be taken to the South. However, the condition of his family and him were tense when the fugitive slaves were captured in the Buffalo. The rising tension prompted them to look for the more secure place to live since neither North nor South was conducive to them.

The Civil War created many opportunities for the members of the Thomas family. Foremost, James P. Thomas married to his lover and accumulated wealth and toured in various parts of the world. Apart from that, he become a rich and respected businessman. Other members of the family would later turn out to be prominent politicians with the help of James Thomas Rapier who became a member of Congress. However, they still faced some limitations that threatened their stay in the country. For example, they felt insecure since they faced opposition from the dominant white people who made the lives and work problematic. Moreover, later in life, disasters struck whereby all the assets and businesses of James P. Thomas dwindled, leaving him a miserable person. As result, Dick Rapier was left in California while other members of the family moved back to the South.
